Evening Star Goes Black in Rare Celestial Event

Posted on May 23, 2012. Filed under: Science | Tags: , |

The shadow of Venus last passed across the sun in June 2004. After another transit by the planet this June 5 and 6, the spectacle will not recur until 2117.

On June 5, skywatchers will have their last chance to glimpse a rare celestial spectacle, a “transit of Venus,” in which the planet passes directly between Earth and the sun. Venus will take six hours to march across the star’s face, appearing as an inky black dot in silhouette against the looming solar disk.
After that, the sun-shadowedVenusian outline will disappear until 2117. Becausethe planet’s orbit is slightly off-kilter, its solar transits come in pairs spaced eight years apart, with more than 100 years between pairs.
During the most recent transitpair of 1874 and 1882, observers around the world focused on triangulating the Earth-sun distance. They tried to time precisely when Venus entered and exited the sun’s disk, so they could calculate the size of the sun (a complicated endeavour, it turns out, since an optical effect that blurred the boundary between planet andsun muddied the timing measurements). The most recent transit happened in 2004 — only the sixth such performance seen through telescopes — and it revealed that large portions of the Venusian atmosphere are visible to Earthly observers.
Now, scientists are hoping not only to study Venus itself during the transit, but are using the crossing to inform observations of far-off exoplanets that similarly betray their presence by passing between their star and Earth. “Over 100 years ago, astronomers couldn’t have anticipated this transit question,” says astronomer Jay Pasachoff of Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., who will observe the transit from Hawaii.
Pasach off and his colleagues are also deploying nine instruments to locations including Japan, Kazakhstan, and Norway, to study the sunlight filtered through Venus’ toxic clouds.
But such observations aren’tso simple. “Big mirrors and sensitive detectors are not good things to point at the sun,” explains planetary astronomer Heather Knutson of Caltech. Instead astronomers will use the Hubble Space Telescope to capture sunlight reflected off the face of the moon during the transit. In that light are signatures of chemical compounds in the Venusian atmosphere, Knutson says. “It’s the first time we can make this measurement for a truly terrestrial planet.”

HTC ChaCha now available for under ₹10,000 On

Posted on May 23, 2012. Filed under: Technology | Tags: , |

Back in the August of 2011, HTC decided to go in a whole new direction with their mobile phone fleet and introduced their first and only candy bar, QWERTY keypad equipped Android smartphone, the HTC ChaCha . The phone also went by the alias, the Facebook Phone, thanks to the heavy Facebook integration provided by the world’s largest social network.

Taking on the characteristics of a touch-and-type style design and UI, the HTC ChaCha with its little Facebook button at the bottom didn’t make the overall impact that was probably expected. Although the handset did reasonably well for itself at launch and a little after, the company decided that it just didn’tcompete too well with the likes of larger touchscreen devices, obviously offering betterviewing angles.

At the time of its launch itwas priced at about Rs.15,000 and slipped down the price gauge to about Rs. 11,800. The latest price drop will make the touch and type Android-powered device a little more attractive, as it now falls under the ₹10,000 range. Now for ₹9,699, the HTC ChaCha, complete with HTC’s proprietary Sense UI (version 2.1) and Google’s Android Gingerbread (v2.3) is available for purchase on with a 1 year manufacturer’s warranty and bill.

Featuring an 800MHz processor under the hood with 512 MB RAM, the HTC ChaCha has also made it quite easy to update your Facebook account with all kinds of details from sharing weblinks, media etc., with a simple click of a button. The Facebook button at the bottom of the key padlets you share all kinds of details that are on the screen with your registered FB account. The full QWERTY keypadwith individually separated keys, makes typing quite comfortable.

Other features incorporated into the HTC ChaCha include: 2.6-inch capacitive touchscreen with a 480 x320 pixel resolution 3G, EDGE, WiFi with Hot Spot creation GPS with A-GPS support for Google Maps Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP and USB 2.0 5MP autofocus camera with anLED flash and a secondary front facing VGA camera Stereo FM radio microSD card for upto 32GB

With a price reduction like this, the HTC ChaCha could regain some popularity, especially with hardcore Facebook users.

Posted on May 23, 2012. Filed under: Mobile, Technology | Tags: , , , , , , |

Samsung Galaxy Note will start receiving the update notification for the Android 4.0 ICS with TouchWiz update.

Samsung has finally started rolling out the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for its Galaxy Note GT-N7000 smartphones in India. While the Galaxy S II GT-I9100 owners continue to rub their hands, the Galaxy Note users get lucky with this massive update. The new Android 4.0 ICS update also brings slightly tweaked TouchWiz layer.
Earlier this month, The Mobile Indian reported about the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update bring rolled out for the USA and Europe based Samsung Galaxy Note owners. Now, Samsung has quietly made the Android 4.0.3 ICS update build IML74K available for Indian Galaxy Note GT-N7000 owners through Samsung Kies software.
India based Galaxy Note users need to connect their smartphone to the Samsung Kies desktop manager and check for the update. Jonas Bashige, user based in Bangalore, shared a screenshot of the Galaxy Note updated with Android 4.0.3 ICS over Twitter.
Apart from the other usual improvements, the new update brings a new series of S Pen supporting widgets which are clubbed together to form a Premium Suite.
For those who haven’t received over-the-air notification about the software update on their Galaxy Note can try connecting it to Samsung Kies desktop software. If the update doesn’t show up then the users need to try may be later.
Surprising part is that despite of the fact that Android 4.0.3 ICS update is available for Galaxy S II GT-I9100, the Indian users continue to wait for the update.

Hopefully in coming weeks, these Galaxy SII users will start receiving the Android 4.0 ICS update.

UCBrowser Topples Opera Mini from the top slot in India

Posted on May 23, 2012. Filed under: Technology | Tags: , , , , , |

UCbrowser got 33 percent more downloads compared to the long time number one mobile browser.

Opera Mini has long been the reigning king in the mobile browser space for feature phones. But now, that space has been taken by UCbrowserfrom UCWeb.
According to the latest data from Mobango, a popular applications marketplace with 8 million registered users worldwide, UCBrowser registered close to 33 per cent more downloads than Opera Mini Browser.
Another surprising entry in the list of most popular browsers is the recently launched QQ Browser from theTencent Group, which has seen rapid uptake on Mobango.

iBrowser, at third place after OperaMini, is a version of QQ Browser for India. It integrates customized content within the browser for Indian users, and is amongst the fastest mobile browsers today.
UC Browser, which, like the QQBrowser, also has Chinese roots, has close to 20 percentmarket share in India and over 300 million users in more than 150 countries.
But the user base of Opera Mini is still much higher, and with many feature phones coming with Opera Mini browser built in, the need to download Opera Mini doesn’t arise. For instance, MediaTek,which provides chipsets for many feature phones in India, has a tie-up with Opera to preinstall the browser in feature phones. Opera has many similar tie-ups with handset brands as well
Nonetheless, till last year Opera Mini was number one even in terms of downloads and therefore UC Browser is certainly challenging its dominance.

If you’ve decided not to wait for the GALAXY S III , opting to settle for its predecessor instead, we’ve a good news for you. No, Samsung hasn’t slashed the prices, but it’s now shipping the GALAXY S II (GS2) pre-installed with Android 4.0 .

News started spreading, as a few buyers of GS2s expressed their delight on Twitter . Reportedly, only thedevices imported in April or later are offering ICS firmware out of the box. Sadly, those who already own a GS2 in India, will haveto wait further for the OTA ( Over The Air ) update to be made available.

Earlier we had reported about Samsung selling watered-down GALAXY S IIs with model number GT-9100G in India. Thankfully, the current crop of GS2 appears to have a model number GT-I9100 , which is the same as that of the original GS2. This means that in all probability, the handset is powered by the Exynos chipset.
